Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro: Tour de Campomoro Walk

Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro: Tour de Campomoro Walk

The Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro (Campomoro Coastal Trail) is a sensational coastal path stretching between Campomoro and Tizzano in southern Corsica. Along this coastal trail, there are several route options. Beck and I chose to do an extended version of the Canuseddu Loop by initially visiting Tour de Campomoro (Campomoro Tower).

In this guide, we’ll list the route options available along the Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro, sorted by level of difficulty. That way, you get a sense of the scope of trail variations on offer. In addition, it’ll possibly help you choose which trail to do.

After that, we’ll talk about the trail that we did. As mentioned, we did a variation of the Canuseddu Loop by firstly visiting Tour de Campomoro at Punta di Campomoro (Campomoro Point). Throughout this guide, we’ll refer to this walk as the Tour de Campomoro and Canuseddu Loop.

Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro

The Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro is a beautiful coastal path in the Belvedere-Campomoro area, roughly between Ajaccio and Bonifacio. The trail is home to several hidden coves featuring epic boulders and rock formations.

Surprisingly, some of the main Corsica walking guidebooks fail to mention this coastal path. Beck and I think this stretch of coast is one of the finest in southern Corsica. We highly recommend exploring the trail or even just a part of it, as we did.

Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro: Trail Options

The Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro is an approx. 22km path connecting Campomoro and Tizzano (AllTrails). Beck and I would have loved to complete this entire coastal walk, but we didn’t have the time! So, as mentioned, we decided to walk just a section of the coastal path.

Below, we’ll list the main route options along this coastal trail.

Easy

The easiest and shortest trails along Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro are the walks that solely visit Tour de Campomoro and/or explore Punta di Campomoro from the village of Campomoro.

The quickest option is an out and back walk to the tower from the village. Alternatively, you could walk to the tower and then to Punta di Cala Genovese, returning via Punta Bianca (clockwise loop) or I Pozzi (anti-clockwise loop).

All of these options are nicely demonstrated in the image below.

Medium

The moderately difficult walks along Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro are generally circuit trails in Campomoro or Senetosa.

In Campomoro, there are the Pozzi Loop and Canuseddu Loop options. Most people will also visit Tour de Campomoro before or after completing the Pozzi or Canuseddu loops. That’s exactly what Beck and I did – we walked to Tour de Campomoro, then completed the Canuseddu Loop (AllTrails).

In Senetosa, there are the Truone Loop and Conca Loop options. Personally, we didn’t explore the Senetosa area. But, it’s safe to assume that all parts of the Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro are likely stunning!

Hard

Aside from completing the entire Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro, another well-known difficult option is the Manna Mulina Loop. This is an approx. 16km loop starting from Campomoro, going to stunning Cala d’Aguila (Eagle’s Cove) and then returning via Punta di Manna Mulina.

Now that we’ve sussed out all of the main trail options, we’ll tell you more about the walk that we did!

Tour de Campomoro and Canuseddu Loop

As mentioned, a lack of time prevented us from completing all of the Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro. Doing an extended version of the Canuseddu Loop, which included visiting Tour de Campomoro, was an excellent way to at least experience some of the coastal trail.

Below, we’ll look at the trail specs for this walk.

Tour de Campomoro and Canuseddu: Trail Specs

  • Type: Loop
  • Distance: 8.8km
  • Time: 2.5–3 hours
  • Accumulated elevation gain: 240m
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The moderate difficulty rating is based on the medium distance and the, at times, physically demanding elevation gain.

Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro: Our Experience

Let’s dive into our experience of exploring the Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro! We won’t provide a tedious step-by-step trail navigation description. Instead, we’ll showcase the walk we did (Tour de Campomoro and Canuseddu Loop) by highlighting the main points of interest and how we got on!

Campomoro (Parking)

To start any walk along Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro from the northern end, you’ll need to get to Campomoro. As far as we know, there isn’t any reliable or regular public transport going to Campomoro. With that said, you’ll need your own set of wheels to get there.

Car Hire

DiscoverCars.com

If you don’t have your own car, you should hire one using Discover Cars. Personally, we use Discover Cars and highly recommend them for finding your ideal car hire at an affordable price. Booking online is super easy and the free cancellation policy is great.

There is somewhat limited parking in Campomoro. Visiting mid-late morning, mid-week in the middle of May didn’t prove too busy. We found street parking opposite Plage de Campomoro (Campomoro Beach) at the western end here.

Bear in mind that parking can fill up quickly in summer, especially on weekends. So arrive early to guarantee a spot!

Also, you have to pay for both street parking and car park use in Campomoro during the peak season.

Bassa Torra (Trailhead)

From Campomoro, you’ll enjoy a nice walk along its beach before reaching Bassa Torra. This is the official northern trailhead for Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro. From there, we decided to explore Punta di Campomoro by first heading to Tour de Campomoro.

Tour de Campomoro (Campomoro Tower)

From Bassa Torra, you’re only a short yet steep walk away from Tour de Campomoro. Dating back to the 16th Century, the Genoese (Roman) tower is the largest in Corsica. It’s prominently positioned in the centre of Punta di Campomoro, overlooking the surrounding landscape.

At the time of writing, it’s possible to access the tower for €2.50. If you have the time, we highly recommend exploring it. Apparently, from the top of the tower, you’ll enjoy exquisite coastal views.

Having completed a walk beforehand (Sentier Littoral des Bruzzi) and another walk to do afterwards (Capu di Muru – guide coming soon), we decided to crack on with the walk rather than access the tower.

So, from Tour de Campomoro, we headed towards Punta di Cala Genovese to explore more of the headland.

Punta di Campomoro (Campomoro Point)

Punta di Campomoro is a spectacular headland, with Tour de Campomoro being just one highlight. The incredible rock formations that line Punta di Campomoro are extraordinary. Some of the rocks at Punta di Cala Genovese are among the most remarkable to see.

After exploring the coastline at Punta di Cala Genovese, we headed south along the Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro, soon joining the Canuseddu Loop.

Canuseddu Loop

South of Punta di Campomoro, you’ll explore an area called Canuseddu. This area features a lush seaside meadow known as the Canuseddu Plain. Through this plain, you’ll follow an undulating trail, passing more epic stretches of coastline.

Eventually, you’ll reach a beach called Plage de Canusellu.

Plage de Canusellu (Canusellu Beach)

Plage de Canusellu is a small yet pretty bay. The turquoise water is crystal clear, sparkling in the sun’s glow. If you’ve packed your swimsuit, this would be a perfect spot for a dip!

At the northern end of the beach, you’ll notice a dry stone wall. Instead of crossing the wall and following the Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro further south, you’ll turn left and walk inland alongside the wall, by a stream. At this point of the walk, Beck and I spied a cow bathing in the water!

Eventually, you’ll exit the valley floor by turning left onto a switchback path that steeply climbs through low scrubland. During the ascent, you’ll reach some vantage points, where you enjoy outstanding distant views of Tour de Campomoro.

Once you’ve completed the Canuseddu Loop, you can turn right to return to Bassa Torra. From there, it’s just a short walk back to Campomoro.

Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro: Recap

The Sentier du Littoral de Campomoro is undoubtedly one of the most scenic coastal paths in Corsica. If you want to do one of the best coastal walks on the island, then add this one to your to-do list.

Beck and I thoroughly enjoyed walking this trail. Personally, the beauty of the rock formations on the western side of Punta di Campomoro was a highlight. Although we imagine exploring inside Tour de Campomoro would also add to this walking experience.

If you’re making the effort to drive to Campomoro, which is some way off the main road (T40), but don’t have all day to spare, we recommend doing one of the moderate difficulty walks along the coastal trail. We really enjoyed doing this extended version of Canuseddu Loop and recommend you do the same if you’re after a walk that takes only a few hours.
