Is Discover Cars Legit?
In short – yes, absolutely! Rest assured, Discover Cars is a legit online car booking platform. Founded in Latvia in 2013, Discover Cars (formerly Discover Car Hire) is an award-winning third-party car rental company. They provide a reliable and safe platform, where it’s possible to rent a car in roughly 10,000 locations across 145 countries. Certainly, by reading this review, you’ll realise that Discover Cars is more than trustworthy and that you can confidently book with them.
On Discover Cars, you’ll find all of the main car rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Hertz, Sixt and Thrifty. You’ll also notice major booking engines like Skyscanner and Kayak have partnered with Discover Cars. Essentially, these massive companies use and promote Discover Cars, respectively. So, that’s another tick of approval in terms of legitimacy.
Personally, Beck and I have only had positive car rental experiences using Discover Cars. So, we highly recommend them. But, don’t take our word for it. Below, we’ll look at how Discover Cars fare when it comes to customer reviews.
Real Discover Cars Reviews
As they say, the proof is in the pudding. What do customers really say about Discover Cars? Do Discover Cars get good reviews? Overall, Discover Cars rental reviews are excellent. By and large, Discover Car hire reviews are positive and glowing.
On Trustpilot, Discover Cars gets a rating of 4.6/5 stars with over 125,000 reviews. While on Google reviews, there are over 23,000 Discover Car rental reviews, culminating in a rating of 4.4/5 stars.
Of course, you may have read negative Discover Cars reviews, whether it be on Tripadvisor, Reddit or BBB. Often, these reviews have a negative bias because many people simply don’t read or understand the rental conditions. This certainly applies to some Discover Car review complaints that you’ll find online.
But, one thing to acknowledge is that Discover Cars is not a car rental agency. It’s simply a booking engine. So, it’s still up to the car companies to honour your service agreement and provide a good service. Inevitably, some negative reviews aimed at Discover Cars should really be aimed at the individual car rental company. Thankfully, on Discover Cars, you’ll find customer reviews about each car rental agency. So, there is some safeguarding in place to avoid booking with less reliable car hire companies.
So, now you know that Discover Cars is legit and is highly rated when it comes to reviews, let’s find out a little more about the booking platform itself.
What Is Discover Cars?
Simply put, Discover Cars is a third-party website that you can use to search for, compare and book a car rental globally! Basically, you don’t have to spend time researching different car rental providers to compare quotes. In effect, Discover Cars does all of the groundwork for you as it finds all of the available rental deals for any given location.
All you need to do is choose your pick-up location and preferred dates. In mere seconds, Discover Cars will find you the best deals on car rentals. You can then check through the Discover Cars rental options, filter or sort as needed, read any relevant reviews and securely book online.
Below, we’ll look at the nitty-gritty details about how to book Discover Car rentals.
How to Book a Discover Cars Rental
Renting a car on Discover Cars is straightforward and easy to do. Let’s go through the eight simple steps required for booking rental cars on Discover Cars. To show you an example, we’ll go through the booking process of booking a car in one of your favourite places to travel to – Sicily.
Search on Discover Cars
Find your perfect car rental today on Discover Cars. Feel free to use our step-by-step guide on how to book on Discover Cars. Otherwise, have a go yourself! Simply press the button below to search for a car rental today.
1. Enter Your Pick-Up Location and Dates
Once you’re on DiscoverCars.com, simply enter your pick-up location and your preferred pick-up and drop-off dates and times. Bear in mind, for certain locations, there are options for pick-up at an airport, train station, city centre, etc. If you don’t have a specific preference, then choose ‘all locations’ for the destination you are travelling to. Often, Beck and I will specifically pick up and drop off from an airport as that’s most convenient for catching flights.
Also, keep in mind, that it’s much cheaper to return a car to the same place you picked it up.
Bonus tip: by choosing an earlier drop-off time than pick-up time, you can avoid paying an extra day! But, if this doesn’t quite work out with your itinerary, don’t worry!
2. Compare Hire Cars
Once you press ‘Search now’, Discover Cars will show a list of car hire options within seconds. If you’re booking on a desktop, you can use the filter at the top of the page to choose the type of car you want.
On the left-hand side, you can use filters to help you find the exact Discover Cars rental that you’re looking for.
Some important filters to use include searching by price, car specs (manual vs. automatic transmission) and mileage (unlimited vs. limited). Of course, there are many other helpful filters that can help you narrow your search.
If you want to find out more information about a car, press ‘View’. A new tab will automatically open with more details for this car.
3. Choose Your Car Hire
Before proceeding with booking a car hire, we recommend double-checking the location, dates and times for pick-up and drop-off, and the price. You can do this on the new tab that’s opened. This is definitely the time to also read the ‘Rental Conditions’. That way, you’ll know exactly what to expect when hiring that car.
4. Decide Whether to Book Full Coverage
Next, you’ll decide whether or not you want to add Full Coverage, which is also known as Discover Cars Insurance. Choosing to get Full Coverage will depend on whether you already have any other car hire insurance. Certainly, you’ll want to have car hire insurance in some shape or form.
For more information, please read the Discover Cars Insurance: Full Coverage section.
5. Select Any Rental Extras
Once you’ve made a decision about car hire insurance, there are some other possible extras to consider. If you plan on driving to another country, you’ll have to follow the country-specific guidance provided.
This is where you can choose Optional Extras such as an additional driver.
6. Enter Your Driver Details
After looking at Optional Extras, scroll down to Summary. You’ll then enter the driver’s details. This is all fairly self-explanatory.
If you have your flight number, we highly recommend providing this in case your flight is delayed, so the car hire company will be aware of the reason you’re delayed. This will help the car hire company in co-ordinating any change to your pick-up time or pick-up instructions.
7. Pay For Your Discover Cars Rental
Finally, you’ll arrive at the payment screen. Simply enter your payment details. Before pressing ‘Book now’, triple-check the details to make sure there are no nasty surprises in the resultant booking confirmation email. Making mistakes with entering booking details happens to the best of us! Once you’re certain about all of the car hire details and make payment, confirmation usually processes within a few seconds.
8. Check Your Email Confirmation
After booking, you’ll receive an email with a booking confirmation from Discover Cars. The email will contain a rental voucher in the form of a PDF. Make sure to have this on you when you go to pick up your car rental. Generally speaking, most car hire companies don’t require a printout. But, read the email and rental voucher carefully in case there are requirements to print it out and present it upon pick-up.
By reading this review, you now know how to book a Discover Cars rental! Below, we’ll talk more about Full Coverage.
Discover Cars Insurance: Full Coverage
Essentially, choosing whether to purchase Full Coverage is the fourth step of the booking process on Discover Cars. As mentioned, it’s important to have car hire insurance. If something goes wrong with the car, you may be considerably out of pocket. So, if you don’t already have any car hire insurance, you’ll definitely want to purchase Full Coverage.
If this isn’t your first rodeo, you’ll know that car hire companies will charge an arm and a leg for car hire insurance. You’ll arrive at the car hire company counter and they’ll always try and upsell car hire insurance. By already having Full Coverage, you won’t need to buy any car hire insurance from the car hire company itself. Thankfully, the car hire insurance offered by Discover Cars is much much cheaper than insurance offered by the car hire companies.
So, how does Full Coverage work? Well, if your rental gets damaged or stolen and you have taken Full Coverage, you’ll first pay any related charges to the rental company. Then, you’ll file a claim for compensation with Discover Cars and they’ll reimburse you for these charges up to the amount stated on your rental voucher.

How To Find A Great Rental Deal
Admittedly, Discover Cars doesn’t typically offer discount codes or any other particular special discounts. Thankfully, Discover Cars already does a bang-up job at finding you the best rental deals. But, there are some extra things you can do to save even more money. Below, we’ll go through these bonus tips for finding a great rental deal on Discover Cars.
Book in Advance
Similar to booking flights, you can save money on car hire by booking in advance. Generally speaking, prices tend to be higher if you book closer to your pick-up date. With the 48 hour free cancellation policy, you can book a car in advance to secure a better rate. And, if your plans change and you need to cancel, you can do so for free as long as it’s in line with the cancellation policy.
Booking Flights
Skyscanner is our go-to website for booking flights. If you’re looking to find the cheapest flights, we recommend getting the ball rolling with a Skyscanner search. It allows you to scan all airlines and platforms to find the cheapest airfares.
Travel in the Non-Peak Season
Similar to booking accommodation outside of the peak season, booking car hire in the non-peak season is generally cheaper. So, choosing when you travel may help you find a better deal.
Read the Discover Cars Reviews and Ratings
One of the best features of Discover Cars is that it includes reviews on car hire companies. That way, you can ensure that the car hire company you’re interested in using is reliable and trustworthy. In a roundabout way, this will help you secure a better deal as you’ll dodge any hidden fees, which some less-reputable companies charge. Discover Cars recommends that you only book with care hire companies that receive a rating of 8/10 or higher.
The Costs of Renting on Discover Cars
Now you have a few tips on finding a great Discover Cars rental deal, let’s review all of the costs associated with booking a car on this platform. We’ll keep things simple by breaking down the two major costs related to booking a car hire.
1. Book and Pay on Discover Cars
As mentioned in the How to Book a Discover Cars Rental section, you’ll initially secure your booking by paying online. Usually, you’ll just pay a smaller amount and pay the rest at pick-up. Be aware, that if you purchase Full Coverage, you’ll pay for that in its entirety when you initially pay online to secure your booking.
2. Pay Rental Security Deposit at Pick-Up
When you pick up the car, there will be two amounts to pay. First, as mentioned, you’ll pay the remainder of what you owe the car hire company for the rental. Then, you’ll pay a refundable security deposit. Even if you have Full Coverage, you’ll still have to pay this deposit.
Make sure to take a credit card for the deposit as car hire companies don’t usually accept or will charge you extra to use a debit card. Also, companies often don’t accept virtual payments, so make sure to take physical cards to make payments.
Essentially, a deposit will be blocked on your credit card until the end of the rental period. This amount varies from company to company. But, generally speaking, the amount is usually around $1,000USD. As long as there is no damage or theft and you have no speeding or parking tickets, etc., this entire amount will be refunded. This process of getting your deposit back can often take days or weeks depending on the car hire company and your bank.
More Things to Know About Discover Cars
By reading this Discover Cars review, you’ve now got a handle on all of the basics for booking a great rental deal. So you’re totally in the know, we’ll now cover some other important things about renting a car with Discover Cars.
There Is a Minimum Age
When it comes to booking a rental car on Discover Cars, there is an age restriction. The minimum age for booking will depend on the country that you’re booking a rental car in. But usually, the minimum age is 18 years old. In some states in the United States, the minimum age is 21 years old.
Essentially, the Discover Cars booking system is clever and it won’t allow anyone underage to book unless you provide a false date of birth, which is obviously something you shouldn’t do.
There Are Geographical Restrictions
When you hire a car, there are often restrictions related to driving outside the country you’re hiring in. As outlined in the How to Book a Discover Cars Rental section, there are instructions provided to those interested in either cross-border travel or ferry travel. Certainly, if you intend on driving to another country or you intend on taking the car on a ferry, there are a few things that you need to do.
First and foremost, read the Rental Conditions to ensure cross-border or ferry travel is allowed. In the booking process on Discover Cars, the instructions for gaining consent from the car hire company and the approximation of extra fees to pay at the car rental counter are outlined.
Usually, you can request permission from the car hire company in advance by leaving a comment under additional requirements when booking. Make sure to get consent from the car hire company as you may be penalised or lose your coverage if you cross borders or ferry travel without permission.
Also, make sure that cross-border and ferry travel is covered by your car hire insurance. As long as you have permission from the car hire company to cross borders or conduct ferry travel, you’ll be covered by Discover Cars Insurance (Full Coverage).
Check the Fuel And Mileage Policies
Whenever you hire a car, you’ll always want to check the fuel and mileage policies.
In terms of the fuel policy, it’s usually either full to full or same to same. If it’s full to full, make sure to refill the petrol to full when you return the car. Otherwise, you’ll get charged a higher rate by the car hire company to refill the petrol to full.
If it’s same to same, simply refill the petrol to the level at which you received the car and is agreed upon with the car hire company. That way, you don’t have to pay extra to refill to full when you return the rental car.
In terms of the mileage policy, it’s usually either unlimited or limited. If possible, we recommend choosing unlimited mileage for ultimate freedom and flexibility with how far you can drive the rental. Although limited mileage is cheaper, there will be a restriction on what distances you can travel. And, if you go over this limit, you’ll be charged for each additional mile driven!
What Types Of Vehicles Are Available on Discover Cars?
Discover Cars offers all different types of cars. Of course, the type of car available will depend on the destination and what the car hire companies have available. But, generally speaking, you can find most types of car rentals on Discover Cars.
Economy Cars and Station Wagons
Generally speaking, small and medium-sized economy cars are the most popular type of car rented as they’re the cheapest. For most people, an economy car will suffice for their trip. Indeed, economy cars are perfect for couples or small groups with four people or less.
SUVs and Minivans
If you need more space, then you may want to consider hiring a large economy car, SUV or minivan. For larger groups with the need for more seats and storage space, this will be your best option.
FYI – if you have off-road driving in mind, or even driving on unsealed roads, read the Rental Conditions and your car hire insurance very carefully. Often, car hire companies won’t allow off-road driving, which automatically means your coverage will be void if something goes wrong off-road. Additionally, most insurers simply won’t cover off-road driving. Indeed, Discover Cars Insurance (Full Coverage) doesn’t cover off-road driving.
Sports Cars and Luxury Vehicles
It’s possible to book sports cars and luxury vehicles on Discover Cars. If the occasion calls, it’s good to know these types of cars are available. As to be expected, there is usually a premium to pay for luxury cars and the cost of the rental will be considerably higher.
Commercial Vans and Trucks
Of course, we don’t expect many of our readers, who are travellers, to be hiring commercial vans and trucks. But, perhaps, tour companies may be interested in hiring commercial vans to conduct their tours. Discover Cars does offer these types of vehicles. Of course, they generally cost a lot more to rent than smaller vehicles.
Pros of Discover Cars Rentals
In this Discover Cars review, we want to talk about the pros and cons of renting a car on this platform. That way, you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into when you rent a car on Discover Cars. Let’s start with the advantages of booking Discover Cars rentals.
DJI Air 2S
Capture breathtaking aerial photography and videography with the DJI Air 2S. The DJI Air 2S Fly More Combo comes with all of the necessary accessories such as the remote controller, spare batteries and battery charger.
Discover Cars Is Affordable and Competitive
Of course, we all want the cheapest price possible when we rent a car. Certainly, Discover Cars is very competitive when it comes to pricing compared with booking directly with car hire companies and compared with other online booking platforms. Rest assured, that Discover Cars offers some of the most affordable and cheapest car rentals online.
User-Friendly Comparison Tool
As a whole, Discover Cars is a user-friendly website, that makes searching and comparing car rentals very easy. You can tell that Discover Cars prioritise the user experience by making the website straightforward to use. Indeed, comparing cars using the search tool saves you loads of time in finding the best deal.
Seamless Booking Experience
Similarly, booking a car rental on Discover Cars is seamless and effortless. From start to finish, the booking process is logical, intuitive, simple and secure.
There Are No Hidden Fees
We all know that dealing directly with car hire companies isn’t ideal as there are usually hidden fees or costs somewhere along the line. Rest assured, by booking a rental with Discover Cars, there are no hidden fees or charges. Certainly, Discover Cars is very transparent, showing the price of the rental and the breakdown of costs consistently throughout the booking process.
Cancel Using the 48 Hour Free Cancellation Policy
The 48 hour free cancellation policy is another advantage of using Discover Cars. As the name of the policy suggests, as long as you cancel 48 hours before your pick-up time, you won’t be charged for the cancellation. Discover Cars will credit you the full amount to use toward future bookings. Otherwise, you can request a full refund of the amount.
If you cancel within 48 hours of the pick-up time, only the cost of Full Coverage (if purchased) will be refunded in credit.
Highly-Rated 24/7 Support
Discover Cars has a reputation for providing excellent customer service. They even have a 24/7 support team on hand to help you in any way regarding your booking. Please note, that the 24/7 support is only in English. During normal business hours, Discover Cars offers support services in 17 languages.
Cons Of Discover Cars Rentals
We’ll now look at some of the downsides of booking a car rental with Discover Cars. Overall, the advantages of using this booking platform far outweigh any negatives. But, like all websites and booking platforms, it isn’t perfect.
Short Term Rentals Can Be Expensive
Undoubtedly, the price of short-term car rentals for a duration of three days or less tends to be inflated. Although, it’s fair to say that this isn’t specific to Discover Cars, but in hiring rental cars generally. Certainly, you’ll enjoy better value for money by hiring a car for longer than three days.
The Strict Grace Period
The grace period refers to picking up or dropping off your rental car after the agreed times. Often, the grace period is enforced by the actual car hire company, which is then included in the Discover Cars Rental Conditions. Unfortunately, most car hire companies don’t allow any grace period or only a minimal grace period (30 minutes to 2 hours).
If you’re going to be late to pick up or drop off your rental car, make sure to contact the car hire company directly to resolve the issue.
Bonus tip: make sure to give yourself plenty of time to pick up a car after a flight. Often, flights can be delayed, so make sure your car hire pick-up is at least an hour after your expected arrival time (assuming your pick-up is at the airport).
The Premium Cost For Drivers Under 25
Unfortunately, if you’re under 25 years old, you’ll be charged a premium for your rental car. This additional cost is to cover the extra liability insurance required for drivers younger than 25 years old. And, if you’re under 21 years old, the premium is even higher. Essentially, expect to pay roughly $10–25USD more per day for your rental. Again, this is standard practice across the board, which isn’t specific to Discover Cars.
You’ll Find Lesser-Known Rental Companies
To find the cheapest prices on car rentals, Discover Cars uses lesser-known local rental companies as well as large worldwide car hire companies. This is great for supporting local businesses and finding great deals. But, sometimes, these local car hire companies are a lesser-known quantity. So, they may not be as reputable or reliable.
In effect, the prices may be cheaper for renting with a local car hire company. But, generally speaking, these companies may have a lower rating or poorer reviews, so you may not want to book with them. Inevitably, the deal goes begging as you look for a more reliable company that generally charges more. On the other hand, if you choose a lesser-known company for a cheaper price, you may then encounter a poorer overall service and experience.
There Are No Secret Deals or Discount Code
Discover Cars doesn’t typically offer discount codes or special discounts. But, rest assured, by default, Discover Cars helps you find the best available rental deals for any given location and time.
No Loyalty Program
It’s a shame that Discover Cars doesn’t have a loyalty program. Personally, Beck and I really enjoy the Genius discount we get from the loyalty program on Booking.com. Perhaps, this is something Discover Cars can look into!
Rentals Cannot Be Extended
Once you pick up your rental car, it isn’t possible to extend it through Discover Cars. In this case, you’d have to simply rebook another car hire, which may be inconvenient and more costly. Otherwise, you can try contacting the car hire company directly to extend your rental period. If this works out, you’ll need to get in touch with Discover Cars to extend your Full Coverage (if purchased).
The Discover Cars App Gets Poor Reviews
Undoubtedly, Discover Cars has invested heavily in building an excellent website. Unfortunately, the app isn’t quite as user-friendly. Because of this, we highly recommend booking directly on the website.
How To Avoid Scams and Added Fees
We’ve all heard of dodgy car hire companies and nightmare stories of people being conned by them. Thankfully, by booking through Discover Cars, you’re heavily safeguarded against any scams or hidden fees.
But, as mentioned, Discover Cars can only do so much. At the end of the day, it’s the car hire company that provides the car, delivers the service and enforces the rental conditions. So, even if you use Discover Cars, you’re not totally immune to having an issue with a car hire company. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to avoid scams and hidden fees.
Do Your Own Research
By doing some extra research, you can weed out the less-reputable car hire companies and avoid them. Thankfully, there are already reviews and ratings for each car hire company on Discover Cars. But, there’s nothing stopping you from doing some additional research and reading other reviews online.
Additionally, it’s essential that you read and understand the Rental Conditions before booking. That way, you understand all of the coverage you have and you know exactly what you can and can’t do with the rental car. In effect, you’re less likely to be hit with any unexpected fees or charges.
Take a Video of the Car Before and After
At the time of pick-up and before you drive the car, make sure to take a video of the rental car. If there are any bumps, scratches or damages that you see, that aren’t noted in the rental agreement, make sure to let the staff know before you drive the car. By taking a video, you’ll have proof of what condition the car is in before hiring, so you won’t be wrongly charged for any damage. Beck and I do this for every single car that we rent.
If you’re totally risk-averse, you can even take a video of the rental car once you drop it off. Again, it’s further proof of the rental car’s condition, in case you’re ever needing it.
Use The Car Rental Responsibly
This probably goes without saying, but take extra care and caution when driving your hire car. Sure, you might be excited to go exploring a new destination, but take it easy! You don’t want to give a car hire company any excuse to charge you for any damage or for breaking any rental agreement rules.
Of course, even if something goes wrong, and you are hit with a charge or fee, you’ll be completely covered if you have Discover Cars Insurance (Full Coverage).
