Heymondo Travel Insurance Review
Beck and I have been blessed over the years with many wonderful travel experiences during our trips. But, it hasn’t always been sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. We’ve both had mishaps on the road and been in situations where the brown stuff has hit the fan.
There was that time I was driving in Scotland and a loose rock flew out of the mountainside and smashed the roof of my car hire. Whilst, during one of our first trips together in Norway, I embarrassingly slipped onto a sharp rock whilst trekking, injuring my back, which required us to go to the hospital. And, oh, there was that time when we required emergency flights out of Bolivia because of the COVID-19 pandemic!
Thankfully, by having travel insurance when these things happened, we saved thousands of dollars on car hire damage, hospital bills and repatriation flights home. By having a reliable and trustworthy travel insurance provider like Heymondo, you can travel with peace of mind in case the worst-case scenario plays out.
Since launching in 2016, Heymondo has been a firm favourite among budget backpackers. Underwritten by AXA, Heymondo provides comprehensive travel insurance that won’t break the bank. Indeed, there are many glowing Heymondo travel insurance reviews out there. Basically, you can add this one to the pile.
Before we talk about the ins and outs of Heymondo travel insurance, we’re going to share with you a 5% discount code.

Heymondo Travel Insurance Plans
Overall, Heymondo provides three types of worldwide travel insurance policies. The plan you choose will depend on many factors such as the amount of time you’re travelling and what exactly you want to be covered for. Let’s look at these three policy options below.
Below, we’ll look at each of these insurance policies in a bit more detail.
Heymondo Single Trip Travel Insurance
We’ll start by reviewing the Heymondo single trip travel insurance, which is one of the most popular policies. This policy is for trips that are less than 90 days. With this policy, there is a Pro, Premium and Medical option. Let’s look at the differences between these options.
For more details on what specific items are covered, head to Heymondo Travel Insurance Coverage.
Heymondo Top Insurance (AKA Standard Insurance)
This is the cheapest travel and medical insurance offered by Heymondo. So, it’s a popular option for budget-conscious travellers. Yet, it generously covers all of the essentials you’d need in case something went wrong.
In reality, it covers all of the same items as the Premium cover, only excluding some extras such as cruise cover and rental car excess. Of course, compared with the Premium policy, Heymondo Top Insurance offers smaller coverage amounts. But, as far as budget options go, it’s actually quite comprehensive!
Heymondo Premium Insurance
If you want those higher coverage amounts, you should choose Heymondo Premium. In fact, the Premium cover only costs slightly more than the Heymondo Top (standard) cover, and you get significantly higher coverage amounts. So, perhaps the Premier Cover is Heymondo’s best value for money travel insurance.
Heymondo Medical Insurance
If you only want medical insurance without travel insurance, then Heymondo Medical is the policy for you. Although, adding the travel insurance (which, is essentially Heymondo Pro cover), only costs a little extra. So, you may as well go for Heymondo Top cover, so you have both travel and medical cover.
Heymondo Annual Multi-trip Insurance
The Heymondo annual multi-trip insurance covers multiple trips over a year, in which, each trip is less than 90 days. Essentially, you’ll have a home base and do multiple trips throughout the year.
If you plan to do several trips a year, you’ll find the annual cover is great value for money. Certainly, you’ll save loads by getting annual cover, rather than buying multiple separate single-trip policies over a year. Of course, with our 5% discount code, you can save even more.
Heymondo Long Stay Insurance
The Heymondo long stay travel insurance is definitely one of the cheapest long term travel insurance policies on the market. This type of policy covers trips longer than 90 days. If you’re planning a big backpacking trip or you’re a digital nomad, this policy could be right up your alley.
Heymondo Travel Insurance Coverage
Now you know about the types of policies, let’s look at exactly what’s covered in these policies. Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive description of all of the coverage items. Our intention is to briefly recap the essential items covered by Heymondo travel insurance policies. By doing so, we’ll highlight some of the main drawcards for purchasing travel insurance through this provider.
Certainly, you’ll still need to do your due diligence and read the policy documents on the Heymondo website. This will ensure the coverage meets your expectations and you’ll know exactly what you’re signing up for!
Emergency Medical and Dental Expenses
The emergency medical assistance coverage provided in the travel and medical policies is quite exceptional. Medical expenses, emergency dental expenses, extended lodging expenses due to illness and outpatient physiotherapy treatment are all covered in some shape or form.
Medical Transport and Repatriation
Transport or repatriation of yourself, your companions or, if heaven forbid, the deceased, is covered.
FYI – Heymondo Medical insurance only covers this item and the emergency medical expenses mentioned above.
Baggage Damage and Theft
In terms of baggage, Heymondo travel insurance covers quite a lot. It covers theft and damage of baggage, delay in delivery of luggage and administrative expenses for loss or theft of official documentation such as your passport.
Travel Disruption
Missing a connecting flight or experiencing a travel delay is covered by this provider. Most associated costs such as accommodation, meals and rebooked flights are reimbursed.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption
If you have to cancel your trip due to a reason that’s covered in the policy, your trip cancellation costs will be covered. For instance, if you have to interrupt your trip due to the hospitalisation or death of a family member back home, the additional return expenses are covered.
Search and Rescue & Natural Disaster
Bear in mind, that search and rescue is only covered by some of the policies. Whereas, natural disaster is included in more of Heymondo’s travel insurance policies.
Personal Liability, Accidental Death or Disability
Coverage for personal liability, and, heaven forbid, accidental death or permanent disability is covered if the accident takes place during your trip.
Rental Car Excess
Some policies cover the rental car insurance excess. The excess is payable if your car hire is damaged, stolen or involved in an accident.
COVID-19 Cover
Although the COVID-19 pandemic has settled, it’s worth knowing that Heymondo does include COVID-19 coverage. Of course, the situation regarding this inclusion is always changing. So, head to the website for the latest details about COVID-19 cover.
Optional Heymondo Travel Insurance Coverage
Other than covering travel and medical insurance essentials, Heymondo also offers some worthwhile extras. Depending on what activities you have planned and what gear you might take, you may want to consider the following extras.
Electronic Coverage
You can individualise your policy to include coverage for electronic equipment. So, in case of theft or damage as a result of fire or assault, you can claim for electronics such as your laptop, tablet or camera. Indeed, Beck and I travel with a lot of tech gear at times to help capture our adventures. So, we find the electronic coverage very handy.

Capture epic photos and videos with the Sony Cybershot RX100 VII. This is hands-down the best compact camera. We love using this camera when we’re out and about as it’s lightweight, durable and easy to use.
Adventures Sports Coverage
Personally, the Adventure Sports Coverage is an item that’s very important to us. Certainly, Beck and I are always looking for additional cover like this because we often trek at high altitudes. Thankfully, if you’re the adventurous type, many outdoor activities are covered such as trekking up to 5,000 metres above sea level. Head to the Heymondo website for a full list of activities.
Cruise Cover
If you’re taking a cruise, you’ll be happy to know that cruise cover is an optional extra. This extra mainly covers you for any potential medical assistance needed on board.

What Makes Heymondo Travel Insurance Different?
There are many policy features that make Heymondo travel insurance unique. Undoubtedly, the price point is one of the major things that separate this travel insurance provider from the rest.
Value For Money
When you compare Heymondo with other travel insurance providers, the value for money really stands out. Considering the coverage on offer, the price is surprisingly low. So, it’s a popular choice with shoestring travellers!
Coverage For Every Traveller
Certainly, Heymondo is one of the best travel insurance for claims. If you include another traveller on your policy, they will enjoy the exact same coverage for claims. Often, this isn’t a feature of other travel insurance policies.
No Out of Pocket Medical Expenses
Specifically, if something goes wrong, you won’t be out of pocket for medical expenses. You heard that right. You won’t have to wait to make a claim. Heymondo will pay your medical bills upfront.
Heymondo Assistance App and Trip Assistance
When it comes to online travel insurance services, Heymondo is at the top of its game. The Heymondo app is one of the best travel insurance apps available. This ensures making claims is a straightforward process. Additionally, the travel assistance provided by the Heymondo customer service is second to none. Members of the Heymondo team are even available for 24 hour medical chat!
Refund Guaranteed
Unlike most other travel insurance companies, Heymondo offers a full refund. As long as your trip hasn’t started and you haven’t already made a claim, you may receive a full refund up to one month after purchase.
Other Insurers to Consider
When it comes to coverage and price, it’s hard to look past Heymondo. Of course, when it comes to trip insurance, there are infinite options to consider. If we must play the devil’s advocate and offer one possible alternate travel insurance company, it would have to be SafetyWing.
SafetyWing Review
Personally, Beck and I have used SafetyWing many times to insure our trips. In particular, the Nomad Insurance is fantastic value for money with just a small additional cost to add a partner. Unlike most other insurance companies, there’s an option to pay on a monthly basis, similar to having a prepaid phone plan. Better yet, there’s no lock-in contract – you can cancel at any time, which will take effect the month after.
It’s also possible to use Nomad Insurance for trips lasting just days or weeks. Certainly, SafetyWing isn’t just for digital nomads.
SafetyWing is a modern travel insurance company that’s certainly leading the way in terms of how travel insurance should work in the future.
SafetyWing Travel Insurance
SafetyWing is another excellent budget-friendly travel insurance provider. It may not have all of the bells and whistles of HeyMondo, but SafteyWing travel insurance often comes out cheaper!

Bonus Tips
- A pinch of salt with customer reviews: whether it’s Heymondo or other travel insurance reviews, be wary of customer reviews. Often, reviews have a negative bias because many people simply don’t read their policies. This certainly applies to some Heymondo insurance reviews that you’ll find online. But, rest assured, this is a highly reputable travel insurance provider.
- Heymondo age limit: travel insurance for those 65 or older isn’t provided.
- Heymondo contact number: when you purchase a policy, you’ll be provided with an emergency contact number.
- If you don’t know, now you know: adding the United States/Canada to travel insurance always increases the price.
