Grampians Accommodation – Camping

Finally, we’ll list our top camping spots to consider when looking for accommodation in the Grampians. The campgrounds are within the national park and are managed by Parks Victoria. So, be sure to check their website for any booking conditions or unexpected closures, which can happen.

There are a few important things to know about staying at these Grampians campgrounds. Firstly, the campsites don’t provide rubbish or litter facilities. So, it’s important to take anything with you. Leave no trace. Secondly, although many of the camping sites have fire pits, you need to bring your own firewood, as it’s not permitted to collect wood from within the national park. Thirdly, the campgrounds have limited availability, shared amenities and can also book out during peak season. So, you’ll need to book ahead. Luckily, there are some that are free to stay at and require no booking. But, they operate on a first come, first served basis.

Camping in the Grampians, immersed in the nature of the national park, is a wonderful experience. There are hiking trails, lookouts and splendid waterfalls just a stone’s throw away from many of these Grampians camping sites, which in our opinion, makes them some of the best accommodation options.

Plantation Campground

North of Halls Gap is Plantation Campground. Certainly, this is a nature lover’s paradise and an all-round fantastic camping spot. Situated in a tranquil environment, it offers spacious campsites and fire pits for a perfect outdoor experience. Also, surrounded by lush greenery and the Mount Difficult Range, camping at Plantation Campground is an ideal accommodation base for exploring walking trails and wildlife in Halls Gap, Grampians.

The basic yet more than adequate amenities include clean toilets and a (non-drinkable) water tap. There are around 30 pitches for tents, campers and caravans. But, bear in mind, camping at Plantation Campground in Halls Gap is on a first come first served basis, and as one of the only free camping sites in the Grampians, is a popular accommodation option.

The Grampians lie around 250km west of Melbourne and take around three hours to drive to. You’ll take the Western Highway all the way to Ararat, before joining the C222 Ararat-Halls Gap Road straight through to Halls Gap and the Grampians. It’s a very straightforward journey.
